Starting Solids 101: A Gentle Guide to Baby's First Foods

Starting solids is one of those big, beautiful milestones β€” and it can also feel a little daunting. Take a breath, mama. This gentle guide walks you through the basics so those first meals feel exciting instead of stressful.

Is your baby ready?

Most babies are ready around 6 months, but every baby is different. Watch for these signs:

  • Sits up with little or no support
  • Holds their head steady
  • Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex
  • Shows curiosity about your food

When in doubt, check with your pediatrician first.

Easy first foods to begin with

Offer one single-ingredient food at a time, waiting 2–3 days before introducing a new one.

  • Soft fruits: banana, avocado, ripe pear
  • Steamed vegetables: carrot, sweet potato
  • Iron-rich foods: lentils, egg, soft-cooked meat

A few golden safety rules

  • Always stay within arm's reach during meals
  • Offer soft textures β€” no hard chunks
  • Cut round foods lengthwise
  • Introduce one new food every few days

Most of all β€” go gentle

Some days baby eats everything; some days they wear it. Both are normal. Start small, go slow, follow your baby's cues. You've got this, mama. 🀍
